Born in the village Palaichori, Nicosia Area, on 23rd January 1926

Parents: Christofi and Kyriakou Matsi

Brothers: Giorgos and Giannakis

Kyriakos Matsis finished primary school Palachoriou and secondary school Famagusta in Trikomo where his family took up residence after the second world war. He studied Agriculture at the Aristotelio University in Salonika and worked as an agriculturist in Famagusta when the fight began. He stood out for his love for Greece, his fellow men and the environment, disgracing anyone who did not cultivate their land. He worked hard for rights for farmers and workers through the organizations he helped found PEK and SEK. His passion for the freedom of Cyprus was heard strongly in speeches given as a student in Salonika. He was the leader of EOKA in the Famagusta area in 1955, leader of the association EOKA from August 1955 to February 1956 and area leader of Kyrenia up to the end of the fight.

On the 9th January 1956 he was arrested and was tortured with many methods including electric shocks. His relationship with the leader Digenis was so well known that he was visited by governor Harding where he was being held in Omorfitas and was offered the sum of CYP500.000 to divulge the whereabouts of Digenis. Furious with this offer Matsi slammed his hand down on the table and said “a price cannot be put on this fight..i am very sorry but you offend me.” The governor left immediately. Respecting his morals the governor ordered that they stop torturing him. He was then taken to Kokkinotrimithia prison. From there he continued his actions and communication with Digenis who ordered him to continue talks with Makarios and Harding for a solution to the Cyprus problem, after the exile of the Archbishop. He organized the other inmates, he operated a school, he set up a library, made speeches and in general created an atmosphere of a fighting belief within the prison. He organized and enlightened his fellow inmate so well about the British soldiers that guarded them allowing them to burn down their camp, forcing the authorities to replace them. He put together a plan for escape that was used up until the day he himself managed to free himself.

On the 13th September 1956 he escaped and took up the role of Area leader for Kyrenia where he formed a prosperous attack.  He was proclaimed for the amount of CYP5000. On the 19th November 1958 his hide out was surrounded and he was shot down. With his courageous death he was named as one of the most heroic idols of the fight.  What was rescued from his intellectual work was his deep spirituality.
